International kite festival takes place in Pink city of Rajasthan, in the month of January every year. It happens on the occasion of the Makar Sankranti festival.

Tens of thousands of kites can be seen in the sky when Makar Sankranti is near. The whole Jaipur is covered under the roof of kites. This day is celebrated widely as this marks the entrance of the new year according to the Indian calendar.

This is celebrated from January 14 to January 16 every year.

People from all over the world can participate in the festival, and the award ceremony for the same is held at Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur.

How Kite Flying Festival Started?

Kite flying festival is celebrated as it welcomes the new year. Makar Sankranti is celebrated as the summers enter with this. This festival is directly associated with the sun as Hindus treat the sun as a deity. They worship the sun and fly the kites out of happiness. 

The move of the sun towards the Uttaryana is the reason they mark this festival as the festival of the sun.

Kites cover the sky in the pink city, but the kites flying festival attracts a lot of crowds. The festival starts at Jaipur Polo Ground and is divided into two parts. The first one is kite war and the second one is friendly kite flying.

The main kite flying event consists of two events –

  1. Kite War

This event is a competition in which participants are supposed to cut the thread to bring down the kites in the sky. The more kites one brings on the ground, the more points one will get.

This happens at Chaugan ground of the capital city of Rajasthan. 

  1. Friendly Kite Flying

This is a fun activity for kids, and the older generation is also seen flying colorful kites in this friendly festival of kites.

  1. Avoid Chinese Threads

Using Chinese threads in the festival can be deadly as they are made of fine glass. It can cut the fingers of the kite flyer.

Many times kids are left alone on the roof which can result in horrible incidents. Children run on the rooftop, and while running behind kites, they might fall, so kids can not be left alone.

  1. Threads on road

Many accidents happen because of the threads on the road, and deadly glass threads are left by careless flyers, which can result in road accidents.
